A man dressed all in black with white shoes holding a golf club walking on the golf green

It is with profound sadness that Castleblayney Golf Club at Concra Wood mourns the passing of our dear friend and valued member, Eugene ‘Nudie’ Hughes.

Nudie was more than just a member of our club , he was the embodiment of everything we cherish: friendship, sportsmanship, and an infectious love of life that brightened every gathering. Whether on the fairway or in the clubhouse, Nudie’s presence was always felt through his warm smile, his genuine interest in others, and his remarkable ability to make everyone feel valued. Even while battling illness since 2018, Nudie’s positivity and generosity never waned; he continued to drive and support our club golf classic which proudly carried his name and was a familiar and uplifting presence at all our gatherings.

Those of us privileged to play alongside Nudie witnessed firsthand the same qualities that made him a three-time GAA All-Star and a legend on the football field. That same excellence followed him to our course, where he became the only member in our club’s history to win Castleblayney Golf Club Captain’s Day three times across both the old and new courses ; a record that speaks to his remarkable skill and enduring competitive spirit. His graciousness matched his talent, his humility complemented his achievements, and his determination was balanced by his ever-present good humour. Just as he inspired generations of Monaghan footballers, he inspired us all to approach the game, and life itself , with passion, dignity and joy.

Nudie faced his illness with the same immense courage and positivity that characterised everything he did. Even in his most difficult moments, he remained a source of strength and inspiration to all who knew him. His resilience, his warmth, and his unwavering spirit will forever remain in our hearts.

To his beloved wife Teresa, his family, and all who loved him, we extend our deepest condolences. Nudie enriched our lives immeasurably, and the memories we shared with him on our course and around our club will be treasured always.

The clubhouse seems quieter without his laughter, the course feels emptier without his presence, but his spirit will live on in every round played and every friendship forged within these walls.

We were honoured to call him our friend and our member. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
