Hot Scoring at Concra
With placing gone for the first time at Concra Wood, our weekend competition sponsored by Shane Tyre gave our members a first chance to post a record score. And we didn’t have to wait long for our first sub par round. Frank Mc Donnell made it home in 71 strokes – one under par – and this gave him a total of 41 points which was never matched. Not a bad week for Frank as his 37 points in the Wednesday Open Singles had given him a one stroke victory over Greg Sibley. And apparently he reckons there’s more where that came from. Watch this space.
Second prize went to Aidan Mc Nally. He played on Sunday and recorded a score of 40 points, which edged Adrian Kelly into third prize on the back nine. Incidentally Adrian recorded a gross 73, so it won’t be long before the record score tumbles – especially if the weather continues to be so wonderful.
Sunday was an absolutely beautiful day and Concra was bathed in sunshine. James King’s Junior Cowdy side lashed on the suncream and faced the challenge of overcoming a 3 – 1 deficit from their first leg against Portadown G.C. Their performance on the day was top notch, with the first three matches winning sufficiently comfortably to allow the fourth match to be called in. Mickey Reid and Greg Duffy would have preferred to finish out, but that can wait for another day.
Thomas Brennan’s stewardship of the Sam Rutherford Cup side has proved challenging, as a number of his team stalwarts have dipped below a handicap of six. However he put together a fine new look side, and a first leg reverse by seven holes at Tandragee Golf Club on Sunday gives Thomas’s men real hope for the home leg.
The Hi Lo matchplay draw was made on Sunday evening. This is now posted on the notice board. Members are asked to complete these matches by Sunday July 9th – at the latest.
All prizewinners are reminded that our next presentation is on this Saturday night (26th June) at 10 p.m. As a number of our sponsors make a great effort to attend, we should too!
And finally for this week, our competition on Saturday and Sunday is the Clement Mc Kenna Cup. This very popular annual event will be played off the gold tees. With all inspired by Graeme Mc Dowell, no doubt the scoring will be only marvellous!
